‘Up’ Sweeps Weekend Box Office

I never understood how Disney/Pixar manages to crap out a golden egg with each new release of its films, because not only do the eggs keep coming, but they seem to improve in quality with each successive picture. My first reactions to ‘Up’ as a trailer were doubtful but when all is said and done, in the end numbers don’t lie.
According to the Associated Press, the May 29th weekend for ‘Up’ took in an estimated $68.2 million making it one of the most successful weekend openings for Pixar amongst a litany of others including WALL-E, Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles. By contrast last summer’s release of WALL-E debuted with $63.1 million.
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian managed to take in another $25.5 million for the second place raising its total to $105.3 million. Other top-grossing movies for this week include Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell which debuted in their place with $16.6 million and Terminator Salvation coming in at fourth place with roughly $16.1, raising its total to $90.7.
For some reason, Pixar always manages to nail it on the head when it comes to great animation. Sure, with computer animation dominating we can never go back to the classics of Disney, or even the Disney Rennaisance films of the 90s (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, etc.) but hey, you can’t argue with results.
