Alastair Reynolds Gets £1 Million Advance for Next Ten Novels

In an article from the Guardian this week it was reported that science fiction author Alastair Reynolds will receive an estimated £1 million for his next ten novels over a ten-year period from British publisher Gollancz. Reynolds is best known in science fiction circles for his blend of space opera and hard science fiction novels. Chief among them are the five novels that comprise his Revelation Space series. Reynolds has been with the publisher since his debut novel Revelation Space was released in 2000 under Gollancz’s Orion imprint.

“It gives me a huge amount of security for the next 10 years,” said the author to Guardian reporters, “and writers don’t have a lot of security. Even at the best of times you’re worrying about the next deadline, the next contract. To have that in place is fantastic for me.”

While I haven’t read one of Reynolds’ novels personally, there is no denying the importance of his work, not just on the U.K. front, but also on a worldwide stage as Reynold’s novels are often credited with ushering in a new age of space opera.

Reynolds has received two awards and several other nominations. His second novel Chasm City won the 2001 British Science Fiction Award for Best Novel. His novels Absolution Gap and The Prefect have also been nominated for previous BSFA awards. Reynolds has been nominated for the Arthur C. Clarke Award three times, for his novels Revelation Space, Pushing Ice and House of Suns (the latter being on the shortlist for the 2009 awards).
