Apex Magazine Resurrected

Several months ago I did a post on Apex Magazine and the fact that it was closing as a result of the recession (Click Here), so you can imagine my delight when it was announced this week that after a brief hiatus Apex Magazine is releasing a new July issue this week (July 6th).

“As I’ve said before, I’m stubborn. That’s playing a role in this decision. But I also try to be sensible when it comes to expensive business decisions. This time, I have a better plan in terms of financing the magazine,” says Jason Sizemore, managing editor and publisher.

Apex Magazine is also asking readers and fans of the publication to contribute through one of three ways: either via the donate button on their website, through the purchase of their newest anthology Descent From Darkness: Apex Anthology Vol. 1, or through paid sponsorship from the Apex Books (Click Here for Details).

At this point, Apex Magazine will be published in July and August, however, they need US$500 a month to finance the magazine. The July issue includes new fiction from Jennifer Pelland and Glenn Lewis Gillette, a classic reprint of the Writers of the Future winning novelette “The Frozen Sky” by Jeff Carlson, audio fiction from Alethea Kontis, and interviews with J.M. McDermott and Nate Kenyon.

It should also be noted that recently the board of directors of the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA) unanimously voted to add Apex Magazine to the list of SFWA qualifying markets. When Apex moved online in June of 2008, one of editor Jason Sizemore’s reasons was to be able to pay his authors SFWA pro-rates and to get them a wider audience.

Apex is known for its blend of science-fiction and horror, garnering regular nominations on the Stoker ballot and have published SFWA authors such as Jennifer Pelland, Glenn Lewis Gillette, and Ben Bova. Congratulation Jason and everyone at Apex. Click Here to view the site.
