If you've written and published anything, people will think you're more interesting. Lying to people to get laid sounds like a really bad idea which is at least as likely to get you beat up and/or banned from a convention. Pointers like "shower daily" and "listen when the other person talks" may seem obvious, but are sufficiently uncommon (among males who are both straight and still single) as to be useful. Gaming and comic conventions may still be mostly male, but I do not recall going to a science fiction convention that did not have at least one-third female membership, and often the women outnumber the men. (So picking the right convention is also a useful tip.)
