Harry Potter Tops Weekend Box Office

It should come as no surprise to anyone that “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince”, the sixth film in the Harry Potter franchise, did exceedingly well at the box office this week. The midnight screenings last Wednesday alone (July 15) brought in $22 million for the film domestically and if these numbers are any indication the film shows no signs of slowing down.

The weekend gross for ticket sales topped out at $79.5 million making Harry Potter’s cumulative five day total at roughly $159 million. It should also be noted that the film cost Warner Brothers $250 million to make, however, according the popular website Box Office Mojo, the film has nearly reached $400 million in ticket sales internationally, well exceeding its budget.
In second place was Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs ranking in $17.7 million, while third place was Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen coming in at just under $14 million. I make it no secret that the disparity between first and second place movies for this weekend is what you might call extreme, however, the Harry Potter film, which was supposed to premiere last winter, was postponed another six months to avoid conflict with the film Twilight back in November.
