Dreamworks latest romp into the digital animation game has paid off enormously with the opening of its newest feature, Monsters vs. Aliens. According the Hollywood Reporter, the movie made an estimated $16.7 million in theaters last Friday alone. And according to Variety Magazine this figure does not include the 3D showings that took place over the 24-hour period.
The film premiered in over 2,000 domestic screens (U.S. and Canada) and if early estimates are any indication the movie could have made as much as $50 million by last week’s end. Monsters vs. Aliens replaced as the number one box office for this week also beating out Watchmen after less than a month in the #3 spot.
It looks like a fun film. I should go see it. In the meantime here’s a trailer below for your enjoyment.
