While many had high hopes for 9, the computer-animated sci-fi/action film directed by Shane Acker and produced by Tim Burton, however, the actual box office numbers tell a different story. In its opening weekend (as the film debuted last Wednesday on September 9) the release was marked by rather lackluster numbers in terms of box office revenue, taking in a disappointing total of US$10.9 million and coming in second place after Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All by Myself, which took in more than double at US$24 million.

The cumulative total for 9 over its six-day period since its opening has been $15.3 million, barely recouping half of its budget from Relativity Media. Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds held at number 3 with a gross of US$6.5 million this weekend bringing its total to more than US$104.3 worldwide. Nevertheless, Gamer failed to reach the top five totaling less than five million. The fourth movie in the final destination franchise ‘The Final Destination’ clenched the fifth spot with a total of US$5.5 million bringing its total to US$55.

Normally when studios market a new film it’s the trailer that garners mainstream attention in order to get the word out to the general public but very rarely is it the poster. Several days ago the poster for the new movie “9” was released and has been gaining its own momentum around the Internet and blogosphere, despite the fact that a full-length trailer has been around for months.

For those that haven’t heard of the film, 9 is an animated fantasy film produced by Tim Burton and directed by Shane Acker. The movie is based on Acker’s Academy Award winning short film of the same name and takes place in a world parallel to our own, in which the very legacy of humanity is threatened and a group of sapient rag dolls, living a post-apocalyptic existence to find one of their own, 9, who displays leadership qualities that may help them to survive.

The movie is also voiced by such notables as Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Christopher Plummer, and Martin Landau. The trailer looks fantastic. Very dark, very twisted, very unique. If you were a fan of Coraline (or in my case, as a child who had endless nightmares after watching “The Nightmare Before Christmas”) then you’ll definitely want to check this one out.

Also, when you set your trailer to Coheed and Cambria’s “Welcome Home” there is no better music out there today in my opinion than something off the album Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness. Just as a side note, they are one of my favourite bands and if you haven’t listen to any of their music (Click Here). There’s also a trailer to “9” below.
