Jennifer’s Body Trailer Released

What do you get when you mix The Exorcist with Mean Girls? You get one of the sexiest women in Hollywood playing a cheerleader possessed by demons, killing her male counterparts for no other reason but for the purpose of killing them. Jennifer’s Body is basically an all-out horror show, featuring a scantily-clad Meghan Fox (not that I’m complaining) possessed by a demon who feeds off the boys in her local town. However, it soon becomes apparent to her best friend, Needy (played by Amanda Seyfried of Mean Girls fame), to stop her.

A few notable things to point out with this film are that it is written by Diablo Cody, writer of Juno. The film is also produced by Jason Reitman, and directed by Karyn Kusama who directed Aeon Flux back in 2005. The film is set to be released on September 18, 2009 by Fox Atomic and judging from the trailer we will see a lot more of Meghan Fox than we ever did in Transformers if you know what I mean (wink, wink).

Opinion: Does Sex Appeal Increase Box Office Sales?

Sex in science fiction is nothing new. A few weeks ago X-Men Orgins: Wolverine opened to weekend box sales of $85 million domestically, and a total of more than $350 million worldwide to date. Now while more than enough X-men fans supplied the demand for ticket sales (as well as a rough cut of the movie that accidentally got leaked a few weeks prior to the film’s debut), there was however a contingent of women who just went to see the film because Hugh Jackman was staring in it.

Think about that for a minute. If only ten percent of the people that went to X-Men Origins just to see Hugh Jackman, that equates to more than $35 million worth in ticket sales. Putting the millions spent on advertising for a Hollywood blockbuster aside for a moment, one has to ask, how much does sex appeal increase box office sales?

A few weeks ago I went to see Terminator: Salvation (decent film but I was looking for just a few hours of mindless entertainment) and couldn’t help but take notice of the latest trailer for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (also a film I plan to see in the near future). It begins like any standard trailer but for a two-second shot of Megan Fox spread over a motorcycle in cut-off jean shorts that are practically painted on. See picture below.
Eventually when I came back to my senses minutes later, the first thing that came to mind was how that simple two-second clip probably instantly increased ticket sales twenty percent, but it’s not without precedent. Firstly, Megan Fox is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood today (and audiences got a taste of that from the first film). But what about other instances in science fiction cinema where sex appeal has been used to curb audience viewership?

I’ll leave this post open-ended. But the question remains. It seems that for every science fiction film made today there has to be a sexy cast that more often than not has more style than they do substance. But hey, as long as it increases sales, right?

Superbowl Sunday brought about a slew of new trailers which makes sense since Superbowl Sunday is one (if not the) most watched television event not just in the U.S. but around the world. One trailer I was particularly excited to see was the teaser trailer to the sequel to Transformers entitled “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” set to be released on June 26, 2009.

Unlike other film franchises this one brings back Michael Bay as director with the same writers as its predecessor and stars Shia LeBeouf and Megan Fox. I had low expectations when I went to see the first film but wasn’t disappointed. Michael Bay was the perfect choice for this film, and I don’t paticularly like Michael Bay. Nonetheless, here’s the trailer. Enjoy!
