A few months ago when I first heard that next year’s Academy Awards was expanding the ‘Best Picture’ category from five nominees to 10 nominees there’s been one question lingering in my head ever since. Why? The obvious explanation is that a majority of the Academy for Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (or whichever association oversees the Oscars) got together and voted near unanimously in deciding to change the long-standing category. However, as a movie patron and a member of the viewing public this still doesn’t sit right with me.

Then I started to think of it from a different perspective. I questioned whether or not expanding the best picture category would allow the inclusion of more science fiction and fantasy films into the higher echelons of Oscar nominations. Again, I’m torn. But for a few exceptions (Lord of the Rings, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, etc.), science fiction and fantasy are two genres that are continuously snubbed for the best picture category. Children of Men is probably the best example of this in recent years. And while the film managed to gain three nominations, including best adapted screenplay, it failed to go any higher within that realm of cinematic excellence, despite being, in my opinion, one of the best science fiction films of all time.

But putting science fiction aside for a moment, let’s get real. Why are they expanding it in the first place? Isn’t the purpose of having a category with only five nominations instead of ten make being nominated that much better (and a win that much sweeter)? I mean ten is a big number. Six, maybe; seven, acceptable; but when you let ten separate pictures vying for the top spot, doesn’t that take away much of the significance of that award (keeping in mind that no other category got expanded)?

Movies haven’t been that great this year anyway. I’ve only enjoyed Star Trek, District 9, and Inglorious Basterds. Now don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see District 9 or a Tarantino flick on the ballot as much as the next person, but if it comes at the cost of expanding a category just so it can be done, let me just say, don’t bother.

Well, it seems that in my over-zealousness to report the 2009 Emmy Award nominations I appeared to have posted the wrong set of nominees. Sufficed to say the previous post outlining the accidentally placed 2008 nominees has been removed and I apologize for any confusion that may have arisen as a result.

What I’m not sorry about is the actual nominees, for despite a year having passed and a litany of great science fiction programming that has arisen as a result, it seems that the inclusion of science fiction into this year’s Emmy repertoire has actually decreased since last year and the disparity between both posts weren’t that dissimilar.

Case in point, Battlestar Galactica. Despite the fact that many of the big-name categories (i.e. best actor, best show) have expanded their lists to include seven nominees instead of a maximum of six, the academy felt there should be no inclusion for the show for a single acting nomination. Battlestar did, however, pick up five nominations including best visual effects and outstanding directing for a dramatic series. Lost earned four nominations including outstanding supporting actor for a dramatic series (to Michael Emerson for his role as Benjamin Linus), outstanding writing for a dramatic series (for its season five finale ‘The Incident’), and outstanding dramatic series.

Dexter received three nominations including outstanding drama series and best actor in a dramatic series to Michael C. Hall. True Blood received three nominations. The category for best visual effects was the only one where science fiction really stood out. Nominees here included Heroes, Battlstar Galactica, Fringe, Sanctuary, and the Ghost Whisperer. One thing I am excited about is Jim Parsons’s nomination as Sheldon Cooper in the show Big Bang Theory. An awesome show if you haven’t checked it out.

Overall though this year has been disappointing for science fiction. Hopefully next year will be better. Again sorry for the confusion. Click here to view the correct 2009 Emmy Nominations.

Now this statement may be a bit of an exaggeration, but think about all of the changes that are happening in the world of publishing today; less books are being produced by publishing houses (and being purchased by customers), top level editors and agents are being firing in the midst of corporate restructuring, and then there’s the almost daily barrage of potential magazine closures that I read in my RSS feeds every week.

This week’s latest victim was Apex Magazine. Turns out the May issue will be its last, and while the magazine’s official statement on the matter claims that it is “on hiatus” frankly I’m not holding my breath.

Now most of the time (though there are a few exceptions) famous science fiction and fantasy authors took the traditional route for getting their novels published. Typically, this involved getting short story credentials ifirst n a number of SF/F magazines and building up their portfolio (maybe even a few award nominations along the way as well) at which point they would be recognized by either an agent or a publisher, as proof that they not only take the craft of writing seriously but also to show that they are willing to write books for them years and years down the road.

But with many of the magazines closing their doors as of late this year the question remains, “How are aspiring authors going to get noticed by agents and publishers if many of these fine publications are closing up shop?”

Now like I said there are exceptions to this rule. John Scalzi, author of Old Man’s War, was discovered through his Whatever blog by Tor editor Patrick Neilsen Hayden more than six years ago and offered a book contract more or less on the spot after chapters of his novel were read on his blog.

Others like myself have taken up jobs in the book and/or magazine publishing industry, opting to go the route of business networking to make connections with the hoi polloi in an effort to get noticed by major publishers. The obvious advantages here is that people who already work in the publishing industry not only have no illusions about what it means to be a full-time author but also know what to expect from agents and publishers in getting their book published (and vice versa).

If I had to sum up this rant with a few lines it is this. The traditional avenues for getting published in this day and age are either fading, dissolving, or have disappeared altogether. In a business that is already as competitive as ever, aspiring writers have to go the extra mile (or ten) in order to succeed in this business.

For many horror writers and editors, the Bram Stoker Awards have remained the standard for award-winning Horror fiction and literature. The 2009 Hugo Awards are for works first published in 2008 or works first published in 2008 in the US that were published in a previous year outside the US.

To vote on the final ballot, you must be a supporting or attending member of Anticipation. You do not need to attend Anticipation in order to participate in the Hugo Awards. A “supporting membership” will be sufficient to make you a member of the World Science Fiction Society and get you voting rights for both the nomination stage and the final ballot. A supporting membership costs US$50 and can be purchased here.

Just around the time award season comes about. Yesterday, Locus Online published the shortlist for this year’s Arthur C. Clarke Award. Now after the big three awards (them being the Hugos, the Nebulas, and the Philip K. Dick Award) the Arthur C. Clarke Award is definitely one of the more prestigious honors in the industry given by the British Science Fiction Association. Many winners see a spike in book sales. Similarly, an honorarium of prize money is given to the winner equivalent to that of the current year (i.e. 2009 prize = 2009 pounds). The award is given to the first printing of the book in the United Kingdom.

This year’s short list includes the following:

Song of Time, Ian R. MacLeod (PS Publishing)
The Quiet War, Paul McAuley (Gollancz)
House of Suns, Alastair Reynolds (Gollancz)
Anathem, Neal Stephenson (Atlantic)
The Margarets Sheri S. Tepper (Gollancz)
Martin Martin’s on the Other Side, Mark Wernham (JonathanCape)

A list of worthy recipients if you ask me. I look forward to see who will win this year’s prize.

It should also be noted that in comparison to previous few, this year was an exceptional year for film and no doubt that every nominee in the best picture/director category deserves to be on that list. That being said I really think Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard.

Overall though, the Dark Knight deserves the kudos it has coming to it and will no doubt will several awards at this year’s Oscars. You’ve done it again Nolan.
