Now for me this is kind of a surprise seeing it’s a Star Trek movie, but this weekend proved that a relaunching of the Star Trek franchise was a great movie decision for the studios as Abrams’ Star Trek for the May 8th weekend box office made up an estimated $76.5 million according to the Associate Press. This includes an extra $4 million from preview screenings on Thursday night as well.

What do I attribute its success to? Firstly, J.J. Abrams as director, I think there’s enough fans of Lost, Fringe, and Cloverfield to put asses in the seats. Second, there’s more than enough Star Trek fans to fill the other half of the theatre. But honestly, I mostly attributed its success to a well though-out marketing campaign that never pushed the hype barrier in the way Watchmen did. And of course the positive reviews and a great script didn’t hurt either.

The timing was also perfect, a week after Wolverine: X-men Origins and two weeks before Terminator Salvation. You couldn’t ask more better timing. The movie’s budget was an estimated $140 million to produce and if early numbers are any indication it should far exceed its budget during its theatrical run.

What’s the irony of this whole piece? I still haven’t seen it yet. LOL!

For anyone who has even a marginal interest in science fiction or movie entertainment, no doubt you’ve been closely following the latest trailers that have been cropping up on the internet for the new Star Trek film. Now this is probably one of the most anticipated films this year (next to the Watchmen of course) but I’m sure I’m not the only Trekker—or Trekkie—that cringed while watching some of these trailers. Will it be a success? Let’s just say it’ll be hard not to be when you’re working on the heels of a 40 year old franchise. But what’s also amazing is how quickly a two-minute trailer can leave you baffled. That being said, here are 5 reasons why the star trek trailer doesn’t live up to the original franchise.

5) J.J. Abrams – It’s like Lost only with a story

This is probably the most far-reaching of my reasons for why the trailer doesn’t live up to the franchise, but I’m sure there was more than a collective sigh in theatres when they saw that J.J. Abrams was set to direct this feature. Now I love Lost, and furthermore, I love Cloverfield. However, J.J. Abrams is a director that holds true to the adage ‘less is more’ when it comes to story and character development and ‘more is more’ when it comes to effects (taking into account his propensity for destruction). While the studios, writers, and producers claim the new Star Trek film will hold true to the franchise, the very sight of Abrams name evokes a wide range of feelings, from skepticism to the rage of an outright bastardization of a treasured franchise.

4) San Francisco (Circa mid-23nd century)

This was actually redirected from a post on the SFsignal.com but it still makes a valid point. In one of the trailers we are given a one-second screenshot of the San Francisco Bay Area roughly two-hundred and fifty years in the future. In it we see epic buildings taking up most of the land as well as what looks like smog covering much of the skyscape. One YouTuber (click here) noted that these buildings would never be built in a place like San Francisco citing that not only would they be a blight to the urban landscape and cause a lot of pollution, but also that activism from the environmental right would never allow these buildings to be built in the first place. A decent argument. He also goes back to historical pictures of San Francisco and argues there’s no way urbanization would occur this quickly even if it is more than two-hundred centuries in the future.

3) Why is Spock So Angry?

There’s a moment in the first trailer of a half-second snapshot where a young Spock jumps in the air, cocking his arm back ready to throw what looks like the biggest punch of his life. Added to this his face is scrunched in fuming rage as he quickly goes to assault his attacker. Now anyone who knows Vulcans knows that they are essentially emotionless and I can only think of four instances where they actually show emotions. (i) If they are too immature (young) or too senile (old) (ii) if they are being tortured (iii) if they have some type of brain defect causing them to have emotions (iv) or if they are engaging in the ponn far, a Vulcan tradition where their hormones spike off the charts every seven years in which allows them to find a mate. For anyone who’s a fan of Star Trek this one was the first image that caused many to be weary. And for good reason. I wonder how they’re going to explain this one?

2) Star Trek 90210

This is the biggest reason surrounding much of the dislike in the science fiction forums. Frankly, the cast is too young. Now I’m all for revitalizing a franchise but if you see some of the screenshots for this film with all of the cast members together on the bridge of the USS enterprise you’d think they were plucked right out of the Academy with no experience to show for it. For a second you might think you’re watching Logan’s Run, then you remember it’s a Star Trek film. Maybe I’m being contentious here but if this complaint is recirculating throughout the SF blogosphere then I can’t be the only one thinking this.

1) How does Kirk ever become captain?

In the trailer’s opening scene we see a prepubescent Kirk driving what I presume to be a stolen Corvette jutting through the desert being pursued by the robotic authorities. Just as the car is about the drive off a cliff he leaps out, narrowly escaping death. The trailer than flashes forward fifteen years to Kirk getting in a bar fight and as he’s at the hospital licking his wounds he is practically handed over the command of a starship. Now I’m no psychiatrist but I would think that the requirements for Starfleet Academy would be a little more stringent than this. Don’t they usually give the captain’s chair to someone, well, older, more experienced? Forget giving Kirk the enterprise. Hell, you put me in command of one of those ships and I’ll start a war with every race in the universe. We all know that Kirk is one badass mother fucker but how they are going to explain this one is beyond me. Frankly, I’m not buying it.

Despite this article I’m definitely going to see this film but it’s clear from the trailer that they’ve got a lot of explaining to do.

The popular specialty channel, SciFi Channel, owned by NBC Universal and home to such television programs of Eureka, Torchwood, and Battlestar Galactica has decided to rebrand its website and magazine from scifi.com to syfy.com.

Now (as Robert J. Sawyer points out on his blog) most science fiction authors don’t like the term ‘sci-fi’ to describe their works. For many writers of the genre ‘sci-fi’ brings with it a connotation of entertainment science fiction, basically Star Trek and Star Wars, what people’s perceptions of science fiction are rather than what it actually is meant to be. If anything, Sawyer notes, authors prefer the abbreviated SF.

Dave Howe, President for the channel, said that the Sci-fi name was limiting and followed it up with this statement in a recent article to the New York Times (read the full article here). “If you ask people their default perceptions of Sci Fi, they list space, aliens and the future,” he added. “That didn’t capture the full landscape of fantasy entertainment: the paranormal, the supernatural, action and adventure, superheroes.”

Honestly, I don’t really care for the change. I think the bigger question is who will receive the domain name for Scifi.com? Will it simply direct users to the new syfy.com? Personally I get new users added to Twitter every day just by virtue of having ‘Scifi’ in my username ‘ScifiWatch’. In my opinion I think the change will do more harm than good. For one thing it may detract some advertisers and viewers who have long been loyal to the Scifi brand. But putting that aside for a second, despite people’s perceptions of science fiction, when you see the Scifi Channel it’s a clear indicator of the genre. What do people conjure up when they hear Syfy? Some kind of sponge?

Now this doesn’t qualifty as news, but it does qualify as awesome shit you come across on the internet. Now I don’t have an iphone (surprise!) but I understand the importance of Iphone apps for retailers and entreprenerial developers. But if you’ve ever watched an episode of Star Trek: The New Generation and seen them working those archiac panels they call consoles then you’ll find this YouTube video a little more than cool.

With the first part of the Battlestar Galactica finale airing tonight, I thought it would a cool idea to see what the television landscape would look like in the next year following the show’s conclusion. Shows like ‘Lost’ and ‘Heroes’ are beginning to show their age and once in a while it’s nice to get a glimpse of something new and refreshing to feast our visual appetites. Here’s what we can expect in the next little while.

I think the biggest thing people are expecting from the Sci-fi Channel is the spin-off series Caprica. This series has been in development hell for the past few years and few thought it would ever be made into a pilot, let alone a series.

The show takes place ten years before the first Cylon War (fifty years in the past from Battlestar Galactica) and follows the lives of two families, the Adamas and the Graystones. After one of their daughters is killed in an act of terrorism, she is magically reborn through the power of cybernetics. Honestly, I’ve been waiting for this for a long time and while it might be more ‘tame’ than Battlestar Galactica, I enjoy a good family saga.

The most anticipated show to expect this fall would have to be Flash Forward, from Treshold’s David Goyer and Star Trek’s Brannon Braga.

Based on the novel by Robert J. Sawyer where everyone on Earth blacks out for two minutes only to see themselves in the future. The show revolves around events in the year 2009. At CERN the Large Hadron Collider accelerator is performing a test run to search for the Higgs boson. During the run the entire human race loses its consciousness of the present and experiences events from about 21 years in the future. Each individual, except for those asleep, experiences their own future through the senses of their future self. This “flashforward” lasts a matter of two minutes, but when it is over many are dead in accidents involving vehicles, aircraft, and any other device needing human control.

Kings is an upcoming TV series airing on NBC based on the King David story. The series is set in the modern day metropolis of Shiloh, a city under siege where the fighting has gone on for too long and cost far too many lives. When David Shepherd (Christopher Egan), a brave young soldier, rescues the King’s son (Ian McShane) from enemy territory, he sets events in motion that will finally bring peace.

As reported, HBO recently bought the rights to George R.R. Martin’s ‘Songs of Fire and Ice’ series. If all goes well then each book (roughly a thousand pages a piece) will encompass an entire season. Very rarely is a fantasy series given precedence in the television medium, so it will be interesting to see them adapt these books should the pilot ultimately go forward.

Two other television shows to keep an eye on are Eastwick, a show based John Updike’s The Witches of Eastwick about three modern-day women who discover they have magical powers, and V, a chronicle of human resistance fighters battling aliens with The 4400’s Scott Peters.

Then of course if all of these shows don’t pan out there’s always Dollhouse, Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, Fringe, Heroes, True Blood, and many others provided that they get renewed. In the last couple of years it seems the market for quality science fiction programming has exploded, and I have no doubt the genre will continue to expand in the years to come.

1)	Know Your Territory

If you’re planning to pick up girls at a sci-fi convention realize quickly that you’re not in Kansas anymore. Realize that the girls here are more interested in Firefly and Battlestar Galactica than they are in meeting men. So the best advice I can give here is know what the fuck you’re talking about. Try specializing in one category, whether it be World of Warcraft, Star Trek, Dungeons and Dragon, or Neil Gaiman. The key here is to get a meaningful conversation going. Even if it’s debate whether Asimov is better than Clarke — which he isn’t.

2)	The Importance of Cosplay

To me there’s nothing hotter than a woman dressed as Xena, Zelda, or even one of them chicks from Final Fantasy. So why not throw yourself into the fray as well. Many convention goers take part in what is known as cosplay, dressing up as their favorite anime or video characters for fun in elaborate often outrageous costumes. What woman can resist a man dressed as Titus Cloud showing her his impressively-sized “sword”, if you know what I mean?

3) Join Her Guild

The internet has allowed us to meet loads of people without ever having to actually talk to them fact to face. Email, instant messaging, it has all allowed us to communicate in ways we’ve never imagined. Some people take it to a whole new extreme. MMORPGs (massively multi-player online role playing games) take it to a new level, no pun intended. Games like World of Warcraft, Everquest, Project Entropia, and others have allowed groups of people, known as ‘guilds’ to battle online in real-time. You wouldn’t believe it but it’s actually a great way to meet women, that is if you know what you’re doing.

I actually had a friend who went to California to the annual Blizzcon convention and hooked up with one of the members of his guild after meeting her in person for the first time. If you’re not into these games, it’s very playful to challenge a girl to Guitar Hero or DDR if that option is available to you.

For more regarding these online role-playing games click here.

4)	Pretend You’re a Famous Author

Nothing impresses a woman more than a man who’s written a novel, or two, or three. Fortunately for us, most people don’t keep tabs on many authors profile save for a few favorites. Simply say to her you’re a well known author who’s just finished his book signing for his latest novel. For extra points keep a copy of your ‘book’ handy to show her as proof. Just make sure it doesn’t have the author’s picture on the inside jacket. I suggest paperbacks for this. While copyright infringement may be illegal, pretending to be someone famous to sleep with a woman has been going on unregulated for generations. Keep this tip close to home.

5)	Be Yourself

When all else fails this is the best advice I can give you, just be yourself. If you’re talking about us hardcore science fiction aficionados it is very much still a boy’s club. If a gorgeous woman is attending an event like that it is not by accident, she’s a fan of the genre. Use this as a launching point for your relationship and build it from there. It’s much easier to get into a relationship with a girl if you already have mutual interests. Don’t get discouraged. Be yourself.

Along with a new superbowl comes a slew of new trailers the studios shell out millions of dollars for in order for them to premiere for two minutes in between the big game. (An interesting fact, crime in America drops 70% on superbowl Sunday). But it gave me a chance to view the new Star Trek trailer set to priemiere later this year.

Quite honestly, I’m on the fence with this film. I’m a true trekker, always have been, and there’s something about having J.J. Abrams directing this film in particular that leaves me with an uneasy feeling. With the over-the-top effects and all. In the first trailer we witnessed Kirk and Uhura having sex, Spock punching someone in anger, and a young Kirk nearly killing himself by driving an old-style corvette off a cliff which begs the question, “Doesn’t Starfleet Academy have more stringent criteria for membership, let alone commanding a ship?”
