The Fourth Kind Trailer is Now Live

Little has been known about The Fourth Kind up until now but with the release of the first full trailer we do have some details surrounding the film. The Fourth Kind comes from J. Allen Hynek’s classification of close encounters with alien, where the fourth kind denotes an alien abduction. The film is set to star Milla Jovovich and will be released November 6, 2009 by Universal Pictures.

The film is based on actual events, and is set in Nome, Alaska a town with a disproportionate number of reported alien abductions over the last forty years.Milla Jovovich plays the part of psychotherapist Dr. Abigail Tyler, who videotapes interviews with the abductees, and begins to suspect a government cover up.

Flashforward Sneak Peek Released

With a new television season looming on the horizon, one of the most anticipated shows to be watched this fall is ABC’s Flashforward, set to debut on September 24, 2009 at 8/7 Central.

For those that don’t already know the premise, I’ll try to distil it as best I can. One day a global event causes everyone on Earth to lose consciousness for 2 minutes and 17 seconds. During that time people see themselves six months in the future (if they’re not already sleeping or die during the vision). Flashforward centers around a group of individuals in modern-day Los Angelas as each come to terms with the aftermath.

The show is based off the 1999 novel of the same name by Toronto-author Robert J. Sawyer (who I’ve had the fortunate pleasure of meeting on several occasions, most recently at Worldcon in Montreal). And while it’s uncertain how well Americans knew Sawyer’s work prior to his book being made into a television series, his already stellar reputation shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

To coincide with the release of the show, Tor Books recently released new editions of the book with a new cover (incorporating the series logo) which is available in mass market paperback and trade papberback format (image right). Below is a sneak preview from the ABC pilot set to debut on September 24th.

The Wolfman Trailer is Now Live

There was a time not too long ago when recreating those classic monster movies of the past was not only original, but actually cool. The Mummy was made more than ten years ago and spawned two sequels staring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Van Helsing starring Hugh Jackman did bring something new to the table with his portrayal of the fictional vampire hunter. And, let’s not forget the slew of movies based on Frankenstein that were released during the 90s and the past decade.

However, with the release of the first full length trailer of Universal Pictures The Wolfman, a remake of the 1941 classic horror film, I think something has to be said for originally in Hollywood. I find this genre (if you can call it that) is really played out by this point and based on the trailer I think you might agree with me. Or not? I’ll let you decide. The film stars Benicio del Toro and will be released on February 12, 2010.

Heroes Season 4 Preview

The finale of last season’s Heroes I think I can safely say left more than a few fans disappointed, with an endless amount plot-holes and more than a few storylines than were left unresolved. Without revealing any of the sordid details for those that haven’t seen it yet, while the second half of the third season made up for the formal part with stronger characters, plots that were straightforward as opposed to haphazard, and a downplay of action while at the same time amping up the drama, many were let down with the season’s finale.

Nevertheless, for those of us (myself included) still massively addicted to this show, despite its shortcomings, who can’t wait for the season four (Volume five) premiere of ‘Redemption’ on September 21 on NBC, here’s a five-minute preview of the upcoming season that in my opinion reveals far more than it has to.

Avatar Teaser Released

James Cameron is no stranger to science fiction. This Terminator Films (the first two in the franchise) are legendary for their special effects and mythology, and even his other films (Abyss, Aliens, and True Lies) each has remained a cult classic. While most mainstream audiences remember Cameron for Titanic, one of the much talked about films of has been his closed-lipped epic Avatar.

Here’s the premise thus far according to 20th Century Fox:

“The story’s protagonist, Jake Sully, is a former Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. In order to participate in the Avatar program, which will give him a healthy body, Jake agrees to travel to Pandora, a lush rainforest environment filled with incredible life forms – some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also the home to the Na’vi, a humanoid race that lives at what humans would consider to be a primitive level, but are actually much more evolutionarily advanced than humans. Ten feet tall, with tails and blue skin that sparkles, the Na’vi live harmoniously within their unspoiled world. But as humans encroach on Pandora in search of valuable minerals, the Na’vi’s very existence is threatened – and their warrior abilities are unleashed.”

The film will be released just in time for Christmas on December 18, 2009. Check out the trailer here.

‘Legion’ Trailer Released

One of the movies that caused a rather big stir at this year’s ComicCon was the much-anticipation film Legion. The film centers around a Rapture of sorts as thousands of angels bent on exterminating the entire human race descends upon the Earth with the intent of causing as much destruction in their wake. It seems the only thing standing in the way of God and the apocalypse is the Archangel Michael, meant to protect a pregnant waitress in the New Mexico desert whose baby is believed to be the second coming of Christ. (I don’t quite get it either).

The film stars such notables as Paul Bettany (the Da Vinci Code), Dennis Quaid (The Day After Tomorrow, Frequency), singer/actor Tyrese Gibson, and Lucas Black (Jarhead, Friday Night Lights). The film is set for a release date of January 22, 2010 and by the looks of this preview below should have no problem packing in theatres weeks after its debut. Check it out!

“The Lovely Bones” Trailer Released

“The Lovely Bones” by Alice Sebold was one of those books that once it was on the New York Times Bestseller’s List refused to come down. The novel quickly sold out its initial print run of 20,000 at Little, Brown & Company (considered a huge success for that publisher) before going off to becoming an instant bestseller, its hardcover then stayed on the New York Times Bestseller’s List for over a year.

There was no doubt in my mind that based on the success of this book that it would one day be adapted into a full-length feature film. Well, last week my prayers were answered when the first full trailer for the film was released by Dreamworks Pictures.

“In 1973, Susie Salmon is raped and murdered by a neighbor, George Harvey, a serial killer of young girls and women. She finds herself in Heaven, observing her family as they grieve for her. She also watches her killer who, having covered his tracks successfully, is preparing to murder again. Susie struggles to balance her desire for vengeance on Harvey and her desire to have her family recover from their loss.”

The film stars such notables Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Rachel Weisz, and Susan Sarandon, but I think the most interesting aspect of this film is that it’s directed by Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings fame. This being his newest film after 2005’s King Kong, I found it a little odd that Jackson would undergo with such a project as his movies are usually more epic in scope. Nevertheless, I’m sure he will do a fantastic job with this picture.

Whiteout Trailer, It’s Like Canada with Murder

Whoever put this trailer together should win an award, honestly. It never astounds me what an amazing trailer can do for the promotion for a film. Case in point, the latest flick soon to be released by Dark Castle Entertainment puts an unusual spin on the murder mystery and the horror survival genres.

The premise is relatively simple, but the possibilities for this film are endless. A U.S. deputy marshal (Kate Beckinsale) is the only agent assigned to Antarctica and must investigate a murder on the frozen continent within three days before the arctic winter begins.

“Whiteout” is based on the 1998 comic book of the same name by writer Greg Rucka and artist Steve Lieber Dominic Sena and the film is set to be directed by , director of such films as Swordfish and Gone in 60 Seconds. Now “Whiteout” has been in development for several years now, originally slated for a release in the first quarter of 2008, however, the film rights had been acquired as far back as 1999, first by Columbia Pictures before moving to Dark Castle Entertainment.

Nevertheless, this film looks incredible. Check out the trailer below.

Tron Legacy Trailer Released, Get Me My Light Cycle, I’m Going

Now a lot of you will probably blame me for having a lot of posts this week being trailer-heavy as a result Comic Con but really I’m just extremely excited about the films to hit the big screen next year. Case in point, the sequel to Disney’s 1982 cult classic Tron, entitled Tron Legacy.

Now there was a lot of speculation surrounding this film and whether or not it would actually be made into a full length feature by Disney, but the trailer below is more than proof. It’ll be interesting to see how the now-adult viewers of the first film will bring their own kids to the sequel and keep in mind most of these children have most likely never seen or heard of Tron altogether.

So what do we know?

Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

For those that remember the first film, judge for yourselves whether or not this movie is a worthwhile investment by Disney or money being flushed down the toilet by watching the trailer below.
