There was a time not too long ago when recreating those classic monster movies of the past was not only original, but actually cool. The Mummy was made more than ten years ago and spawned two sequels staring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Van Helsing starring Hugh Jackman did bring something new to the table with his portrayal of the fictional vampire hunter. And, let’s not forget the slew of movies based on Frankenstein that were released during the 90s and the past decade.

However, with the release of the first full length trailer of Universal Pictures The Wolfman, a remake of the 1941 classic horror film, I think something has to be said for originally in Hollywood. I find this genre (if you can call it that) is really played out by this point and based on the trailer I think you might agree with me. Or not? I’ll let you decide. The film stars Benicio del Toro and will be released on February 12, 2010.

When Robert Jordan passed away more than a year-and-a-half ago it left a hole in the hearts of the fans and readers of his popular ‘Wheel of Time’ series. While Jordan was slated to continue his series, his untimely death due to a rare blood disease stopped any more books from being produced, at least for a time. Jordan, however, was an extensive notetaker and when the decision of which writer would complete the twelfth and final book of the series came to fruition, Jordan’s widow and editor, Harriet Popham Rigney, choose Brandon Sanderson for the task.

Sanderson, who stated that Jordan was an inspiration to him as a writer, has gained notoriety in fantasy circles despite having a limited number of novels published. These include Elantris, Mistborn and the Well of Ascension, all of which are published under the Tor imprint. Now for avid followers of the ‘Wheel of Time’ series is nothing new, ‘A Memory of Light’, the final novel in the series is scheduled for publication this fall.

However, news hit yesterday that ‘A Memory of Light’ will be split into a 3-book trilogy weighing in at a monstrous 800,000 words. The first book in the trilogy, entitled ‘The Gathering Storm’, will be book twelve in the ‘Wheel of Time’ series and will be the first of the three novels to the bestselling fantasy epic published over a two-year period.

Harriet McDougal said on the process behind A Memory of Light: “The scope and size of the novel was such that it could not be contained in a single volume, It was a piece of marvellous good fortune that Brandon Sanderson undertook the work. He is a great pleasure to work with, as well as a wonderful writer.”

To date the ‘Wheel of Time’ series has sold over 14 million copies in North American and over 30 million copies worldwide with translation into 28 languages. The last four books in the series were all #1 New York Times bestsellers. Universal Pictures acquired the movie rights to The Wheel of Time in August 2008, and currently plan to adapt The Eye of the World as the first movie.
