What can be said about the season finale of Heroes that probably hasn’t been said already? Frankly, I was more impressed at myself for completing reviews for an entire volume of the show, but I digress. I should warn you that this review is going to jump around all over the place so if you haven’t seen the finale I caution you to STOP READING NOW before I continue.

I think the consensus with audiences regarding the season’s finale will be rather mixed from the ‘This is so f*cking stupid’ to the ‘Oh, that was the best finale of Heroes ever’. To be honest I’m sort of indifferent to the whole show at this point. For a season that was half sensationalistic and at times melodramatic (Villians) to a second-half that was more subtle in its character development and pacing (Fugitives) it’s amazing the show ever made it to this point at all. But there were some notable conclusions to be made from it nevertheless.

I think my biggest disappointment with the show was how it was so much like its previous volume finales, or as I like to put it, “Sylar, Sylar, Sylar”. Only this time there is no exploding man, there is no viral agent to destroy, there’s no magic formula to rid Heroes of there powers, only Sylar, and plotholes too numerous to count. At this point in the show you’d think they’d at least come up with a new villain, or a series of new villains. While volume three wasn’t the best volume it did pique our interest enough to expect the unexpected, rather than simply ride out the finale on its own inertia.

The most shocking moment of the episode was the death of Nathan Petrelli. But I don’t think his death was the shock, so much as the quickness and brutality of it. With one foul swoop of his finger, Sylar slits Nathan’s throat. But in the end, Noah Bennet convinces Matt Parkman to permanently remove Sylar’s memories and replace them with Nathan’s. In the end, Nathan is burned in a pyre with the surrounding Heroes watching on, and Matt Parkman mentally manipulates most of them to think it’s Sylar.

Honestly, where was Mohindar and Ando as this whole thing was taking place? Couldn’t one of them taken care of HiroPeter when he was passed out to help Nathan and in their fight for Sylar? Couldn’t have we seen the fight between Sylar and the Petrelli brothers? It is the finale after all?

In the final minutes of the show we’re given a glimpse into the next volume of episodes entitled ‘Redemption’. In it we learn that it is six weeks later and the Building 26 division has been disbaded. Tracy Strauss is apparently not dead and has taken the form of an amorphous liquid supervillian going around killing everyone who had any connection with Building 26. Others have implied that this is Tracy’s second sister “Barbara”, who was also mentioned by Dr. Zimmerman in “I Am Become Death“.

And then we discover that a trace of Sylar may have stayed within Nathan’s mind as he adjusts the clock before exiting his senatorial office.

I’m getting tired of this series at this point. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still one of the most original and interesting shows on television, but a lot of that mystique from the first two seasons has grown a kind of patina that’s either tarnished this show’s original allure, or quite frankly left it going nowhere.

For a much better review than this one, read the finale review at io9 HERE.

Now I’m a huge fan of Heroes, despite it’s third season being panned by critics for cramming too many subplots into each episode and not creating enough character development. Well, it seems there’s no stopping the show as recent news from the Hollywood Reporter states that the show was recently renewed for a fourth season. Sufficed to say it’s been a difficult year or two for the show. It’s third season was effectively split into two volumes as a result of last year’s writers’ strike (episodes 1-13 comprise the volume ‘Villians’ while episodes 14-23 of its third season comprised the current second-half volume entitled ‘Fugitives’). Changes to the writing staff, including the firing of Jesse Alexander and Jeph Loeb and the rehiring of Bryan Fuller after the cancellation of his show ‘Pushing Daisies‘, have also stalled the show.

It’s also worth noting that ratings decline since the show’s third season have led to speculation as to whether or not the show would be renewed for next fall. The network ordered 18-20 episodes for the new season, a slight decrease from the previous season of 23 episodes. Show creator, Tim Kring, has also tentatively titled its fourth season ‘Redemption’.
