Why I Make Less than $30,000 and Still Blog

europe_by_night_small-resize-s925-s450-fitIf someone were to objectively take a look at my blog homepage they might assume that the ultimate purpose of “Scifi Watch” was to make money as a result of the heavy-laden reviews of television shows and DVDs. Now I’m not going to lie and say that one of the purposes of this blog is to make money (because it is) but I should tell you that’s not my ultimate goal. I think people who blog solely for the purpose of making money will crash and burn very quickly.

Now while one of my goals is to eventually make enough money off this site to blog full-time from home, the truth of the matter is I just love to write. It’s become so second nature me now that I can churn out a really good science fiction post or review in less than an hour with very little effort. Not to mention I just love writing about science fiction. I’ve studied the culture, the history, its literature, its cinema, and know enough now so that I can offer an original and varied opinion.

This blog is also a platform to promote myself and my work. And while I’m still seeking representation for my novel (click here), it never hurts when a literary agent reads a query letter stating that you have a science fiction blog with X amount of viewers each month. Blogging never feels like a chore to me. The words of my blog posts practically write themselves. Money is never at the front of my mind because the work is its own reward. I could make a dollar this year and I would still be blogging. Because quite simply, science fiction is my life.
